Fireplug
FPC Pipe Closers are made using Firefly 101/102 and are designed
to surface mount around the pipe penetration. They can be
used on either solid walls/floors or partition type hollow walls/floors
in this way. However FPCs are extensively used on hollow constructions,
as the wall of the canister ensures the intumescent activates and
remains where it is needed. The steel canister is 56mm deep
and filled with intumescent.
ACTION
Under
the action of heat PVC pipes soften as the intumescent expands,
sealing the void left by the disappearing pipe. In the instance
of metal pipes the intumescent absorbs the heat, this detracts from
it tracking along the metal pipes and breaching the compartment.
N.B. Copper pipe
will also melt and collapse under heat, in this instance the Fireplug
canister will act as with PVC. Lagged pipes should also be
protected as the intumescent will crush the insulation as it burns
off.
PERFORMANCE
Fireplug
FPC has been tested by TRADA to British Standards BS476, part 20,
on 14th May 1993, test No. IT360 and at the Building Test Centre
to British Standards BS476: Part 22: 1987: Clause 5, following the
methodology of PREN 1366.3 (1993), where 120 minutes insulation
and integrity was achieved. Full test reports are available
on request.
APPLICATION
Fireplug
canisters are fixed around the pipe and the toggle clip engaged.
The canister is then slipped along the pipe to the wall or ceiling.
The canister is then fixed to the wall or ceiling. The fixings
used on the test were four number 50mm wood screws, screwed directly
into the aerated block (Thermalite, Celcon, etc.). If fitting
to concrete or brick a 65mm steel screw plugged and bedded in intumescent
mastic is recommended. The opposite side of the wall/floor
to the Fireplug FPC can then be back filled with sand and cement
if required.
When
a Fireplug FPC is to be used on a hollow type wall/floor it may
be possible to insert the canister into the construction.
The canister depth of 56mm should suit most hollow wall/floor structures,
as shown.
