Ventilation
ducting is widely used in both domestic and commercial
buildings.
Both walls and floors are subject to fire regulations
and must be fire protected in accordance with Approved
Document B of Building Regulations.
Once a hole is made in a wall or floor for PVC ducting,
the integrity of the construction and its ability to
perform in a fire is reduced significantly, this must
be firestopped to reinstate the original fire rating
of the wall or floor.
The popularity of forced / controlled ventilation is
on the rise as it can be much more energy efficient
than traditional ventilation methods. The use of centralised
ventilation units and heat recovery units, result in
the building being subject to penetration holes both
horizontally and vertically through the structure, creating
pathways for the passage of both fire and smoke.
To combat this a range of FIREFLY 109 Duct Fire Sleeves
has been developed.

PVC VENTILATION DUCT FIRE SLEEVES
The
FIREFLY 109 Sleeve has been developed to provide maximum protection
for holes created by the introduction of the most popular sizes
of PVC ducting with minimal installation time. In a fire situation,
the sleeve expands internally to crush the duct and create an
effective barrier against both heat and flames. Unlike other "intumescent"
materials the FIREFLY 109 Sleeves do not need additional support
and will only expand inwards.
Fitting
Instructions
Step
One
*Use the sleeve as template and cut a hole in the floor
or wall to provide a snug fit.
Step
Two
If ducting is already in place then cut along the length
of the sleeve with a sharp knife, opening the sleeve to
wrap around the duct, repair the cut with the tape provided.
Step
Three
If the duct is running tightly against the ceiling then
the adjacent side of the sleeve can be cut away leaving
a "U" shaped sleeve.
Step
Four
Slide sleeve along the duct and into the cavity, ensuring
that the sleeve has at least 25mm protruding from each
side.
